Mechanism Of Action Of Sulfamethoxazole & Trimethoprim

• Sulfamethoxazole competitively inhibits dihydropteroate synthase, the enzyme responsible for bacterial dihydrofolic acid synthesis.
• Trimethoprim binds to dihydrofolate reductase and inhibits the reduction of dihydrofolic acid (DHF) to tetrahydrofolic acid (THF).
• Inhibition of this pathway prevents the synthesis of tetrahydrofolate and, ultimately, the synthesis of bacterial purines and DNA, resulting in a bacteriostatic effect.
• Tetrahydrofolate is an essential precursor in the thymidine synthesis pathway and interference with this pathway inhibits bacterial DNA synthesis.

• Co-Trimoxazole can be used to treat:

1. Urinary bladder or urinary tract infections (water infections)
2. Respiratory tract infections such as bronchitis
3. Ear infections such as otitis media
4. An infection called nocardiosis which can affect the lungs, skin, and brain.

Method Of Administration Of Bactrim Forte 800/160 Mg Tablets

• Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
• Make sure that you finish the course of Co-Trimoxazole which your doctor has prescribed
• The dose of Co-Trimoxazole and how long you need to take it depends on the type of the infection and its severity
• Doses may be changed in special conditions so always follow your doctor's or pharmacist's instructions.
• If you take more than you should, talk to a doctor or go to the hospital straight away.
• If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember it unless it is nearly time for your next dose.
• Do not take a double dose (two doses at the same time) to make up for the forgotten dose.

• Although the following side effects are not common in everyone, some patients may complain from:

1. High levels of potassium in your blood which can cause abnormal heartbeats (palpitations).
2. A fungal infection called thrush or candidiasis which can affect your mouth or vagina.
3. Headache
4. Feeling sick (nausea)
5. Diarrhea
6. Skin rashes
